This ladderback side chair is a chair style that actually goes way back to the middle ages and was actually one of the most popular styles in the 17th century throughout Europe. As Colonial America emerged, this style chair soon became quite common in the United States too.

Today we offer the ladderback chair in reclaimed barnwood. While many of the early chairs were made with a straw seat and lightweight round legs, our barnwood ladderback is solid wood and indeed hefty, durable and strong. The construction techniques of mortise and tenon joinery and block bracing mark the cornerstone of Amish chair construction today just as they did back in the day.

You can be assured of the quality of our ladderback chairs. Available as both and arm chair and side chair. The style can also be customized in your choice of other premium hard woods. Simply give us a call.

Fill The Knot Holes

As with all reclaimed barnwood furniture, there may be occasional knot or nail holes in the wood. You have the option to fill these holes with a clear epoxy or leave as is. The clear epoxy blends in nicely and creates a smooth finish across the wood's surface. Leaving the holes exposed enhances the rustic nature of the piece.

Best Quality Amish Chair Construction

  • Mortise and tenon joinery locks all critical joints together. Wooden tenons fits snugly inside the mortise opening and the joint is locked together when the final pieces of the chair are assembled, providing the strongest joint that can be used.
  • In addition to the mortise and tenon joints, corner blocking reinforced with metal screws and glue firmly secure the legs and seat together
  • All wooden seats are scooped out for added comfort while sitting for long periods
  • Fabric and leather upholstery materials are hand stretched over the seat cushioning which is top quality, long lasting foam cushioning

All wood used on this barnwood chair is 100% reclaimed solid oak barnwood from felled barns sourced locally throughout Eastern Ohio and surrounding areas.

All lumber is made usable for furniture by undergoing a stringent cleaning and drying process which includes locating and removing any nails with a metal detector and kiln drying to exterminate any insects and their eggs. Kiln drying also brings down the moisture content to roughly 7% which minimizes shrinking and warping later on.

A smooth, protective catalyzed varnish with low sheen finish seals and protects the chair for years to come.
